History

In 1887 women from the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America were deeply concerned for the needs of immigrants and the aftermath of slavery in their country. A call for a national day of prayer was issued and the Women’s World Day of Prayer (WWDP) grew from this “prayer-seed” planted in faith. Women from other denominations joined in and the movement rapidly spread to other countries. By 1927 it became known as a World Day of Prayer and its widespread impact was recognised with deep gratitude.
